Christmas of 1957 I made the pages of the Topeka Capitol Journal.

"Harry Welty was found trying to pry off a football helmet that was just a little bit too large but not large enough to slide off as easily as it was put on. Harry is the seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Welty of 1226 Mulvane."

The photo wasn't this big in the newspaper but scaling it down to size really didn't do justice to my big mouth. It was one of four published pictures of Topeka children who were all doing some Christmas "Hoping" in various Topeka stores.

I learned early about how the press can "stage" the news. I remember that the photographer asked me to put on the helmet for his picture. 

My  wife,  daughter, and son all had their photos in their local newspapers as youngsters.
