My letter to the DFL Screening Committee Once upon a time there was a school board member who liked to wear silly slippers when he read his favorite books. They called him...Harry Welty 2101 E 4th St Duluth, MN 55812 8-2-99 Lynn VanDervort Dear Lynn, Thank you very much for your invitation to screen with the DFL next week. As a candidate for the School Board I’m officially running as a non-partisan candidate. It is, of course, no secret that I have been an active Republican since arriving in Duluth a quarter century ago and not much of a secret that I have been a pain in the neck for the same party in recent years. I have covertly and overtly supported many Democrats in the past and will no doubt continue to be a "switch hitter." Nonetheless, I feel an obligation to my party not to actively pursue a DFL endorsement. Consequently, I will not make an appearance at your screening committee but I would welcome questions afterwards from anyone at the meeting. My phone number is in the book. All of us have a tremendous interest in making the Duluth public schools the best they can possibly be. You can rest assured that I am determined to continue working to this end. Sincerely, Harry Welty
