12-6-2000 Duluth schools' budget, taxes draw little interestNews Tribune The Duluth School Board's annual Truth in Taxation hearing Tuesday evening drew a handful of people interested in commenting on the presentation about the district's budget and its proposed tax levy. While the district adopted its 2000-2001 budget of $110.9 million in June, state law required the district to present budget information along with its levy information at the tax levy hearing. Later this month, the board is expected to approve its certified maximum levy of $22,877,764, which is up from last year's $22,116,756. Several board members spoke in favor of levying the maximum allowed by the state, despite concerns stated by Brad Bennett, a former School Board member and a member of the tax watchdog organization FIGHT for Minnesota. Another Duluth resident, Rosie Loeffler-Kemp, who has three children in the Duluth public schools, spoke in favor of the board levying the maximum. State law requires the School Board to set its final levy for taxes payable in 2001 no later than Dec. 27. However, the board is expected to vote on the tax levy before that date -- at its regular monthly meeting on Dec. 19.
