Dear Chair Neumann:
As the school board considers the move to the six hour day, please be advised
that it is the opinion of the D.F.T. Executive Board that a change in the school
day must be negotiated. The fact of the matter is that what would constitute a
six period day and its effect on the teacher work day has never been explained
to the D.F.T. Executive Board or to members.
The present language in the contract is there because of the desire of
administration and the school board. Further, the definition of what constitutes
this day has been well established by past practice as has the need to negotiate
any changes in the school day.
Plea be advised that should the school board move to a six
hour day without engaging in negotiations, we will consider this to be a
unilateral change in working conditions and an unfair labor practice.
